Honoré Daumier Caricaturista

“Daumier showed his commitment to the people and was a staunch defender of freedom of expression, he was one of the leading figures of French realism and a pioneer in the use of press cartoons,” a work for which he was equated with Rembrandt, Rubens and, especially, Francisco de Goya, since his cartoons are reminiscent of the ‘Caprices’ of the Aragonese.

Synopsis of Honoré Daumier Caricaturista

Honoré Daumier was born in Marseilles in 1808 and died in Valmondois in 1879. He dedicated his whole life to unmasking the liars, the hypocrites, the shysters and the politicians. And he applied a wild satire to them that has ended up becoming furious.

Considered by some to be an artist comparable to Goya, Rembrandt or Rubens, he is for all of them one of the greatest figures of French realism, as well as a pioneer in the use of vignettes in press as a weapon to shake power. With over 4000 lithographic prints made, his work was published in French weeklies and newspapers between 1831 and 1871.

Daumier demonstrated throughout his life an undeniable republican commitment and, because of the role he played as a defender of freedom of expression, he will remain an emblematic artist. His cause was also the defense of the humble against the powerful.
